Statement at the Opening of the 36th Ordinary Session of the Assembly of Heads of State and Government
"Since our last Summit, the frameworks that had been established to foster peace in different conflict situations have largely held up. We are relieved and gratified at the Agreement reached in Algiers on the Cessation of Hostilities on the tragic conflict between Eritrea and Ethiopia. This OAU-brokered agreement, with the support of our external partners, needs to be consolidated through the earliest possible attainment of a comprehensive peace package. In this context, the speedy deployment of the UN peace-keeping force need not be overemphasized." - Dr. Salim, July 10, 2000
