Commemoration of Mwalimu Julius Nyerere's Birthday

"I first met Mwalimu in 1959 when he came to Zanzibar as part of the efforts to promote unity among the Zanzibaris in the struggle for freedom. I was then a young man of 17 and was involve din youth and student politics while I was the King George VI Secondary School. I still remember the very powerful message that Mwalimu delivered at the public rally in Mnazi Mmoja Grounds. On that occasion, he urged Zanzibaris of all colours, creed, and political affiliations, to subordinate their artificial differences to the greater cause of unity, arguing that only through unity and determination could the struggle for freedom be won." - Dr. Salim, April 14, 2001
