Discussion with Joaquim Chissano on the UN Secretary General Race

  • Share

In 1981 Dr. Salim ran as a candidate for the United Nations Secretary General to both succeed and challenge Kurt Waldehim, who was running for a third term. Throughout the year, Dr. Salim had to have multiple conversations and sessions with key stakeholders in order to know the country position and whether they would either support, reject or abstain from his candidacy. This is just a sample of those multiple conversations.

"Foreign Minister Chissano was very supportive of the idea of my candidature and he undertook to discuss the issue with President Samora. He pledged to do his utmost to work vigorously for my candidature. He pointed out that President Samora would be visiting the Soviet Union, Bulgaria and the German Democratic Republic in December this year and he would encourage the President to raise the issue with the Heads of State of those countries." - Dr. Salim, August 30, 1980
