Speech at the Conferment of a Degree of Doctors of Laws at the University of Cape Town
On December 7, 1998 Dr. Salim was conferred an Honorary Degree from the University of Cape Town. His address on 'Africa and the Challenges of the New Millennium' addressed many of the most pressing issues facing Africa but also the potential that lay ahead:
"As we enter the new millennium, the promotion and protection of human rights has to occupy a centre stage of our endeavors. This will involve nurturing values which respect human rights, building institutions, putting in place mechanisms, and allocating resources that will ensure the promotion and respecting of basic rights." - Dr. Salim, December 7, 1998
