Following the unexpected death of Edward Sokoine on April 12, 1984, President Mwalimu Nyerere appointed Dr. Salim, who was just 42 at the time, as Prime Minister of the United Republic of Tanzania. Dr. Salim’s tenure as Prime Minister was short but it allowed him to travel and engage with Tanzanians across the country. He was also the first Prime Minister to come from Zanzibar.
